The
Hana Coastline will capture your heart and soul. Pictured here
is Alau Island just past Hana on the east side of Maui, Hawaii. The small coconut
grove at the top of this tiny, offshore island has a fascinating story! Two local
boys were both going off to fight in WWII, and just before they left their island home,
the lifelong friends swam out to this prominent landmark each carrying a coconut.
Once there, the young men carefully planted them with the hope that if one or both of them
did not return from the war, that their mothers would be able to see a tall, stately
coconut tree in their window view to remind them of the love of a son or sons lost.
This Story has
a happy ending. Both soldiers did return to Hana at war's end, and the two coconuts
have now grown into a beautiful grove for all to see. |
