Henri Huet PhotographThis Photograph  by Henri Huet appeared in many newspapers around the world and in Life Magazine on February 11, 1966.  From the accounts of Huet and AP correspondent Bob Poos:  "Although his own wound was so completely bandaged that he could barely peer out of one eye, Private First Class Thomas Cole, a young medic of the First Cavalry division, spent hours tending fellow soldiers worse off than he.  One was Staff Sergeant Harrison Bell, whose bandaged head Cole cradled on his knee as he fed C rations to him, then carefully wiped his face."

The Conflict In  Vietnam seemingly has so few redeeming qualities to offer up as balm for all the heartache that occurred there and is still being dealt with even now.  For me, the only good things to come out of it are the images that remain for all to see and feel, lest we make the same mistakes in judgement again in the future.  My own daughter was a Navy Field Combat Medic in the heady days of Desert Storm (read into THAT what you will) and my pride in her is renewed every time I see this photo.  I realize that the war in Vietnam had no exclusive on this kind of photography but as both a former combat pilot in Vietnam and a working photographer today, it is these images and the people who captured them that have come to mean a lot to me ...... have given me pause to stop and smell the roses along my way.

Photo by Henri HuetPerhaps Henri Huet's  most haunting photograph is this one also taken in 1966 in Bong Son, South Vietnam.  Here a Vietnamese mother and her children are framed by the legs of a soldier from the U.S. First Cavalry Division and seared into the minds of all who will SEE by the late Henri Huet.  There were NO winners "In Country" ..... only losers.  Our intentions were good but the result was terrible and not anywhere near equitable when weighed against the carnage.  It remains my lasting opinion that these artistic, hard working people who loved their land and life cared not one whit about the politics surrounding where their next bowl of rice came from!

My Intentions  here are pointed towards your enjoyment of photography as an art form ........ not to break open old wounds about this period in our history.  Consider these books and by all means ....... enjoy your relationship with your camera!
